I was talking to someone who works with me a few days ago who is in the process of getting his life together. For me that began happening when I started showing up on time, which happened about the time I turned 30. Showing up on time whether or not I want to helps me develop discipline. When someone comes to work at Kidrobot I usually tell them, "we don't do late. here." One of the most important things, at least for me, is finding the capacity in myself to do what's needed, regardless of whether or not it's what I want to do. It's still a struggle at times. Breaking old habits is a great way to learn to pay attention.

Thurs PM

One of the main motivating forces in my life, more and more, is just sadness. I used to be motivated by a kind of burning hunger, a continually vibrating discontent that was always there. Discontent is very painful, especially when we're not in touch with what is really going on inside us. Our hands are on the wheel and we don't even realize that we're not actually the ones driving the car.
And, more I pay attention to myself, the more I find myself deepening. Each day, over and over again I notice myself reacting to some tiny event. I have been paying attention to this for so long now that I often can choose not the follow that reaction. I just decide not to go down that road. And in the moment of making that choice I almost simultaneously find that the reaction transforms itself into a deep sadness that is also a kind of gentleness. That gentleness is a kind of sensitivity.
It is a willingness to be open and let the world in. So instead of fighting back, and pushing outwards, I gently let reality in.
The discontent is still there. I still vibrate and burn inside. But the burning is less and less in charge. More and more what motivates me is only what needs doing in this moment, right now. And this one. And this one. I am no longer just driven by the discontent. I drive the car some of the time now. I transform the energy and use it as fuel for my own tenderness.

Kidrobot x LaCoste

Brilliant reviews for the sneakers that Chad & I designed for the LaCoste colab. The super limited sneakers come out this fall & come with KR PEECOL toys especially designed by eBoy for the project. Lots of 3M (heel cups and rims). I've been wearing the samples around and getting stared at. Check out reviews on Sneakerfreaker, HighSnobiety, and Hypebeast.

Nike Tech Pack

Excuse the lousy photo, I'm feeling lazy today. I'm totally in love with my Nike Tech Pack hoodie. I just picked it up from Nick & Jen at ClassicKicks on Elizabeth. Check out the welded pockets! None of us can figure out how they managed to weld onto fleece. The more time I spend designing clothing, the more I realize it's all about the little trim details.

Perpetual creativity
Being creative has nothing to do with your mind. The mind exists to judge, to criticize -- because it's a survival organ, the mind's primary function is to make sure we're safe, to judge if that yellow blob over there is a scary lion or a broken bulldozer. The mind can't deal with uncertainty, and being creative is always, always putting yourself in the land of the uncertain. To the untrained mind that's equivalent to walking into traffic blind. The prospect of something new, something that arrives out of nowhere is intrinsically terrifying to our egos.
There is no place for the mind during the process of actually creating things. We take advantage our minds later, at the end of the process, to evaluate if what we have made is beautiful, ugly, scary, worthwhile, or might land us in jail.
Learning to become perpetually creative is nurturing the habit of getting our mind out of the way. Writer's block is just a habit. The amazing thing about human beings is that we can nurture new habits. We can retrain ourselves to create differently.

Monkey coming soon!

This is possibly my favorite piece of clothing that we made this year at Kidrobot, based on Sket's S4 Dunny. Blue 298 to match my taxicab dunks.

Prinzengracht, Amsterdam 6:28 AM.

It is usually very simple things that move me. An elegant form that says one thing in almost violent, stark perfection. It's excruciatingly hard to do. The line between simplicity and stupidity is a razor's edge.
